How to make egg chair

Creating an egg chair, also known as a hanging egg chair or swing chair, can be a rewarding DIY project. Here’s a simplified guide to making a basic egg chair frame and cushion. Keep in mind that this project requires some woodworking skills and tools.

Materials You’ll Need:

For the Frame:

  • Wood beams or boards (e.g., 2x4s or 2x6s)
  • Wooden dowels or metal rods
  • Wood screws
  • Eye bolts
  • Steel chain
  • Carabiners
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Paint or wood stain (optional)

For the Cushion:

  • Foam padding
  • Fabric (preferably outdoor or upholstery fabric)
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Zipper
  • Sewing scissors
  • Measuring tape

Instructions:

Building the Frame:

  1. Design Your Frame:
    • Plan the design of your egg chair frame. You can find various designs and blueprints online for reference. Make sure it’s comfortable and safe.
  2. Cut and Shape the Wood:
    • Use a saw to cut the wood beams into the desired lengths according to your design.
    • Sand the cut edges to ensure they are smooth.
  3. Assemble the Frame:
    • Assemble the pieces of the frame using wood screws. Make sure the frame is sturdy and well-constructed.
  4. Drill Holes for Eye Bolts:
    • Drill holes in the frame where you’ll attach eye bolts to hang the chair.
  5. Attach Eye Bolts and Chain:
    • Screw eye bolts into the drilled holes.
    • Attach steel chain to the eye bolts using carabiners. Ensure that the chain is securely fastened and capable of supporting the weight of the chair and the person sitting in it.

Creating the Cushion:

  1. Measure and Cut Foam Padding:
    • Measure the dimensions of the seat and back of the chair frame.
    • Cut foam padding to match these dimensions.
  2. Cut and Sew Fabric:
    • Cut your chosen fabric into pieces for the seat and back of the cushion, leaving extra material for seam allowances.
  3. Sew the Cushion Covers:
    • Using a sewing machine, sew the fabric pieces together, leaving one side open for the cushion to be inserted.
    • Add a zipper to the open side to make it easy to remove and wash the cushion cover.
  4. Insert the Foam:
    • Slide the foam padding into the cushion cover through the zipper opening.
  5. Close the Cushion Cover:
    • Once the foam is inside, close the cushion cover using the zipper.
  6. Attach Cushion to the Chair:
    • Place the cushion onto the chair frame, securing it as needed to prevent it from slipping.
  7. Paint or Stain (Optional):
    • If desired, paint or stain the wooden frame to protect it and enhance its appearance. Allow it to dry completely before use.
  8. Hang the Chair:
    • Use strong and reliable hardware (e.g., heavy-duty ceiling hook) to hang the chair securely from a sturdy overhead support.
  9. Test for Safety:
    • Before using the chair, make sure it’s hung securely and can support the weight of the person sitting in it. Test it at a low height to ensure it’s safe.

Please remember that safety is crucial when making and using a hanging egg chair. Ensure the chair is properly anchored and capable of supporting the weight of the user. If you’re not confident in your woodworking skills, consider seeking assistance from a professional or purchasing a pre-made egg chair.
